  • employers cannot be held liable if an employee who holds a concealed weapons permit brings firearm to workplace provided the firearm is left in a locked vehicle.
  • consumers may now posses fireworks of certain types, only to be used on their own property. Individual Towns can override this, prohibiting sale or use of fireworks. Min. age is 21. Fines for violation of local statute range from $50 – $500. You can vote on this issue at the North Yarmouth Town Meeting on 10/18/11.
  • public gathering places will no longer be required to have a sprinkler system if open fifty calendar days per year or less.
  • people who have only one arm are permitted to carry switch-blades.
  • new law criminalizes ANY sexual conduct between caregivers and incapacitated people.
  • new law allows for the mining and sale of gravel at correctional
  • facilities for revenue or trade as a farm product.
  • protection from abuse orders, there is now a two week window in which to prove a protection request is valid, list of seven things individuals are prohibited from doing during that time. A judge can now divide personal property during that time, and can also order termination of life insurance benefits during that time.

With regard to motor vehicle laws ………

  • Truck drivers are no longer allowed to be using Methodone AT ALL ! … not only when driving.
  • a similar law prohibits the use of the drug called Bath Salts.
  • anyone with a disability can now obtain a 21 day parking
  • placard / permit.
  • new public law prohibits text messaging, and broadens the definition of “distracted drivers.” this includes instant messaging, emails, texts, or any manual composing or reading of messages on an electronic communications device.

The above matters produced much discussion and many questions from the group.

Discussion Janice Selig has moved her offices to Route One in Freeport and will have an open house soon to be announced.

Margie Hansel’s bumper crop of apples has produced many extra bushels on hand !!! If you need apples for Thanksgivng pies, or other events please contact Margie! If you know of any non profits food pantries, etc. that might need some apples let Margie know.

Michael Babin is building the “property management” portion of his business, he is available to act as rental agent, rent collector, can handle repairs, etc.

Discussion was brought up on whether to change our NYBA social evening to the 4th Thursday of each month instead of the 3rd, as many members seem to have conflicting appts that third week. We will ask Janice if she can do a reminder for that item on the same day or day before …. as she does for the morning meetings.

Reports Andy Walsh reported $1048.57 in our account, and forwarded to Marilyn M those few members that have not rejoined for one last follow up.Marilyn Matthews will speak at the next meeting on changes going on in the insurance industry.

Sue Copp, Thad Day, and Marilyn Matthews will ask Tina Burnell to come in and train us on website management, so we can pull the responsibility for that away from Tina who has completed building the site.

A motion was voted on to enlarge the membership criteria for NYBA to include those who LIVE in No Yarmouth but whose businesses are located in other Towns. It passed unanimously, with Janice Selig recusing herself from the vote. A motion followed by Thad Day, seconded by Marilyn Matthews, to amend the bylaws to specify that only Officers, duly appointed representatives, and those members whose businesses ARE in No. Yarmouth can lobby on behalf of NYBA. Rob Taisey offered a counterpoint discussion on allowing others to become officers.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 AM — Next meeting will be held 11/10/11

Respectfully submitted: Marilyn Matthews, Secretary
